Treasure Starfish Once upon a time there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach bee he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer he called out, "Good morning! What are you doing?" The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean." "I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?" "The sun is up, and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die." "But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach, and starfish all along it? You can't possibly make a difference!" The young man listened politely, then bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said,"It made a difference that one." There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can become aware of that gift, we gain through the strength of our visions the power to shape the future. We must each find our starfish. And if we throw our stars wisely and well, the world will be blessed. As I remember, my brother and sister both had severe asthmatic attacks in the childhood. Towards the end of the year, his son caught scarlet fever. The patient may contract acute bacterial peritonitis, in which case a surgical intervention should be considered. I think she's got epidemic meningitis. Is there anybody in your family who has suffered from the same eye disease as you? The patient is ill with influenza. 病人患流行性感冒7 (be) sick with: 多用于美式英语,与be ill with可以相互替换,但sick with不能改为sick of例句:The doctor told me that I was sick(ill) with hypertension. Jackie fell ill with a fever last week and has been in bed ever since. The patient was seized with apoplexy yesterday afernoon. Attacked with acute myocardial inraction, the patient was surveilled a week in hospital. The patient troubled with constipation should have enough sleep, regular time meal and proper mastication of food. Fibres from the macular region of the retina are particularly vulnerable to inflammation. 视网膜斑区的纤维特别易患炎症 expose...to (be exposed to): 以为“使......易患...... An attack of fever weakens a child and exposes it to all kinds of infections. When having cold, children are exposed to pneumonia. On examination the patient was suspected of carcinomaof the caetum. The longer a person has smoked, the greater becomes his liability to fall a victim to long cancer. Be (come) down withbe taken down with: 意为“患...... After being in the rain, Tom came down with a bad cold.在外淋雨后,汤姆患重感冒病倒了 be stricken (down) with; be stricken with: 意为“为...... She was stricken with fever yesterday. 病”,其特征是,不仅表示患病的开始,还表示患病过程中所受之苦,特别是精神上的痛苦例句: many years Harold was afflicted with edematous laryngitis. 哈德罗患水肿性喉炎多年了19 be affected with (by): 一般用来表示“患...... Both the lungs are affected by the infection. On necropsy the patient was found to have been infected with tuberculosis as well. 尸检发现病人还患过结核病1 be laid up with: 一般用来表示“患...... Daniel was laid up nearly a month with chronic appendicitis. 丹尼尔患慢性阑尾炎卧床近一个月 be pulled down by: 意为“患...... Mozart was pulled down by anaphylactoid shock suddenly at 3 yesterday afternoon. 3 be confined to bed with: 意为“患...... His wife was confined to bed with pyogenic osteomyelitis. Preston is bedridden with rheumatic heart disease, and the doctor fear he will soon be no more. Maxwell is in bed with pulmonary emphysema.

Across the street from the church was a Pan American gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped. It was closed Christmas, but I noticed a family standing outside the locked door, huddled under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then got about them as I raced to keep up with Jill. Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents’ house our annual Christmas dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station. My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned in the middle of the road and said, “I can’t stand it!” “What?” asked my mother. “It's those people back there at the Pan Am, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's Christmas. I can’t stand it.” When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them the parents and three children — two girls and a small boy. My father rolled down his window. “Merry Christmas,” he said. “Howdy,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to stoop slightly to peer into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I stared at the children, and they stared back at us. “You waiting on the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and prospects of a job. “Well, that bus isn’t going to come along several hours, and you’re getting wet standing here. Winborn’s just a couple miles up the road. They’ve got a shed with a cover there, and some benches,” my father said. “Why don't y’all get in the car and I’ll run you up there.” The man thought about it a moment, and then he beckoned to his family. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing. Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder and asked the children if Santa had found them yet. Three glum faces mutely gave him his answer. “Well, I didn’t think so,” my father said, winking at my mother, “because when I saw Santa this morning, he told me that he was having trouble finding all, and he asked me if he could leave your toys at my house. We'll just go get them bee I take you to the bus stop.” All at once, the three children's faces lit up, and they began to bounce around in the back seat, laughing and chattering. When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door and straight to the toys that were sp out under our Christmas tree. One of the girls spied Jill’s doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. I remember that the little boy grabbed Sharon’s ball. And the other girl picked up something of mine. All this happened a long time ago, but the memory of it remains clear. That was the Christmas when my sisters and I learned the joy of making others happy. My mother noticed that the middle child was wearing a short-sleeved dress, so she gave the girl Jill’s only sweater to wear. My father invited them to join us at our grandparents’ Christmas dinner, but the parents refused. Even when we all tried to talk them into coming, they were firm in their decision. Back in the car, on the way to Winborn, my father asked the man if he had money bus fare. His brother had sent tickets, the man said. My father reached into his pocket and pulled out two dollars, which was all he had left until his next payday. He pressed the money into the man’s hand. The man tried to give it back, but my father insisted. “It’ll be late when you get to Birmingham, and these children will be hungry bee then. Take it. I’ve been broke bee, and I know what it’s like when you can’t feed your family.” We left them there at the bus stop in Winborn. As we drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at the little gihugging her new doll.
